Whether this dedication stems from Kyle’s desire to help others, or from some other incident in Sumners’ past has never been determined, but it provides him with the drive to see that the patients under his care are cured as quickly and efficiently as possible. Sumners was fortunate enough to lose his first patient during his internship aboard the USS Fayetteville, where he had the company of more Fayetteville’s more experienced medical personnel to help him overcome his feelings of regret and remorse for not being able to save the crewmember’s life. Despite this, however, Kyle still remembers vividly that moment, where he watched helplessly as his patients vital signs weakened and failed. The Dominion war helped ease the pain of losing a patient; as the war dragged on Kyle lost more patients then he could count. Because of the pain that most doctor’s feel when losing a close friend, Kyle tries to avoid close friendships with other members of his crew, unsure if he could weather the grief and remorse of losing a friend because his judgment was impaired by the bonds of friendship. While this doesn’t prevent him from interacting with the crew, he does avoid anything beyond simply socializing with his crewmates. Description: Doctor Sumners could easily be described as a stereotypical human in appearance. Of an average height and build, there is little that could distinguish him from any other human to the untrained eye. He keeps his hair cropped short; partly for vanity, and partly due to his profession. Background: Doctor Sumners was introduced to the medical practice at a young age; his father practiced medicine at the local hospital. His father's inspiration lead Kyle to specialize in sciences and mathematics while completing his primary education at the local schooling facilities, both of which are important to medical personnel. In his sophomore year of High School, Kyle completed a basic First Aid course offered by his schooling facility, learning the basics of treating minor injuries, such as scrapes and small cuts. While he never had the opportunity to put that knowledge to use, it was enough to put Sumners on the road to his chosen profession. Hearing the tales of Starfleet Legends of Captain Kirk, Captain Spock, and Admiral McCoy in his classes, Kyle stepped onto a path different path then his father, and submitted an application to attend Starfleet Medical's eight-year program. He was driven by the knowledge that Starfleet would present him with the challenges that he would not face in planetbound medicine; unknown diseases to cure, and new lifeforms to treat. Disciplinary Notations: None at this time.
