Starfleet Marines ?

The question of whether or not Starfleet has a Marines Division has long been on the minds of many Star Trek afficianadoes. If there are Marines, how come we never see them? The only references to Starfleet Marines comes from the Star Trek movie, "Undiscovered Country", in which Colonel West (presumably a Marine Colonel himself) begins to outline a rescue plan for Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy, which would utilize "Marines".

So, does Starfleet have Marines or not? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, Starfleet has personnel specially trained for heavy assault combat and Special Operations who are refered to as marines, but Starfleet does not have a specific personnel division of Marines. "Marines" in Starfleet are simply specially trained sub-division of Security Force Division personnel, who utilize a "traditional" marine ranking system to indicate their level of ability and training within marine-style operations.

Starfleet Intelligence ?

Starfleet Intelligence is another specialized division of the normal Security Forces Division. Starfleet Intelligence personnel are trained for undercover and special covert investigations. They gather information on both military and criminal Threat Forces at work both within and outside the boundaries of the United Federation of Planets. When they do find themselves on an occasion where they must wear a Starfleet uniform, it is usually a black and gray version, often devoid of rank insignia and other identification markings. This is to maintain their anonymity and importance within the "Intelligence" community.
