HISTORY

Dana Khendros was born the first of two children to Tan’Zia Khendros, a single parent who was a botanist on Starbase 262.  Little is known about her father other than he was an extremely handsome man that had swept her mother off her feet in a night of seduction with Dan’Zia being the product of the passion.  She never held this against her mother, but she often wondered where the rest of her roots came from.

Dan’Zia’s fascination for engineering began when she first stowed onto a docked ship reloading and ended up in the engineering department.  It was a good thing she was detected immediately or she would have surely caused havoc as her curious hands pressed every button within her reach.  Instead of being angry and disciplining her, the engineer took her aside and explained the functions and importance of each section she had so nonchalantly touched.  It was then she decided she would make the beasts soar through the darkened skies for it was the engines that gave the beasts the power.

At the age of 14, Captain Lewis of the USS Destiny, at her mother’s request, took upon the eager young woman and was her mentor.  She spent endless hours going over schematics and was an endless vat of questions at the heels of every engineer in the department.  Her tours of the bridge became commonplace.

At the age of 17, Dan’Zia left for Starfleet Academy with her major being engineering and her minor being flight control and psychology.  She got herself in royal hot water when she took the testing ship out of dock manually and after having spent forty-eight hours recalibrating the engines boosting efficiency to 99.1%.  Not bad for an old clunker ready to be sent to it’s final resting place.  She had been very lucky they were so impressed with her abilities and dedication, she was not thrown out for her lack of good judgement.  She had many friends and was very sociable.  She got along well with her professors.

A week before her graduation, tragedy struck.  Her mother suffered from a natural death and died in her sleep.  Dan’Zia took it pretty hard barely making it through her graduation.

After graduation, she was assigned to the USS Victorian as an engineer, but her attitude towards her position soon changed.  She always gave 200% in her duties, but she was beginning to realize it might not be enough.  Her next few years of Starfleet service took her throughout  the Federation from working hours with her head in a conduit encasing to being Lieutenant Assistant Chief Engineer aboard the USS Ossolan.  Her service here earned her the right of Lieutenant Commander and she was beginning to truly enjoy the responsibility and authority invested in her.

On a temporary assignment at the Daystrom Institute, Dan'Zia gave seminars on engine repair enjoying answering questions of eager minds.  She liked sharing stories with those just beginning their careers.  They confided in her and they trusted her.  She was a kind and compassionate person.

Soon after, Dan’Zia, now a Commander, was offered command training.  She accepted and finished a year later and was assigned as the Executive Officer aboard the USS Bryant under the command of Captain Luciano Santini.  There she worked very hard aboard the explo4ration ship and was involved with first contacts.  She became very close with her Captain to the point he even discussed his personal issues with her.  It was a partnership that flourished with each mission they completed.  They became closer comrades and friends after Dan’Zia took a phaser blast to the back in order to save her Captain from the line of fire power.  It was then that Captain Santini began having personal feelings towards her, but never expressed those feelings until many stardates later.  He began molding the young fearless officer to take over command of his heart and soul, but in the back of his mind, he knew she’d never return his inner feelings.

After serving many years, Dan’Zia took a Leave of Absence.  All circumstances/records concerning the absence have been sealed and is considered classified information.

Dan’Zia returned to the USS Bryant, under Captain Santini’s insistence, again acting as first officer.  She didn’t return as the bubbling and compassionate person she had been and was often more of a tyrant than a leader.  She became more confrontational and argumentative and on a few occasions was down right vicious.  But Captain Santini could see the Dan’Zia from the past lost inside the cold shell of her body and stuck it out with the vibrant officer smoothing out more than on situation then he cared to deal with.

Their physical relationship began one night over a few bottles of Klingon blood wine and although for him it was an act of love, he knew for her it would always be an escape from the secrets that dwelled in the deepest part of her soul.  He was one of the few who knew the whole truth of her LOA and though she rejected him often, their relationship was a close one.

As time past by, Dan’Zia began pushing for a command of her own, only to be indirectly told that Captains need a heart and now that she didn’t have one, her chances were dwindling.  Captain Santini knew the woman was dying inside and it broke him up to see so much potential being thrown out the door, so he pulled some strings and got her the command to the USS Independence.  It wasn’t exactly the type of command she wanted, he knew, but he believed she was the best to lead the new recruits into a victorious career.  He had pushed this promotion as her last chance to come out of her pain and find the Dan’Zia from the past that he had grown so fondly of.  If she failed, he knew in her mind that would be the end of her career and he had faith that her inner battles would subside.  She wasn’t exactly elated by the new position, but she would give it her all.  When it came to her duties, no one worked harder than she did.  Her work had become her life.  Now he could only hope this change would bring her to smile again.
